Movies: NASA women in HIDDEN FIGURES, Taraji P. Henson
Remember the passionate Cookie from the television show Empire? If you’ve enjoyed her eclectic performance, take a look at the following trailer for the upcoming biopic Hidden Figures. 20th Century Fox debuted the first trailer for its upcoming movie during coverage of the Rio Summer Olympics.
Empire’s Taraji P. Henson leads the cast as NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson, who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015 for her pioneering work. Octavia Spencer (the Help) plays fellow NASA mathematician Dorothy Vaughn, and Janelle Monáe rounds out the central trio as NASA engineer Mary Jackson.
Also starring are Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, Jim Parsons, Aldis Hodge, Mahershala Ali, and Glen Powell as John Glenn.
The official synopsis reads:
HIDDEN FIGURES is the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe)—brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.
From the trailer, it looks as though the film will intertwine civil-rights drama and workplace comedy, underlining the women’s struggle against the white male perception of them. Their mistreatment is depicted in the scene where a white-collar Joe dumps his trash can into the arms of Johnson, assuming she’s the cleaning lady. At a different point, a cop who pulls the friends over remarks that he “had no idea Nasa hired … ” “There’s quite a few women in the space programme, sir,” Spencer’s character replies.

“The film will be the first time the contributions of African American scientists to that effort have been the focus of story about the space race on film.” (via Deadline)
Directed by Theodore Melfi (St. Vincent, I Want Candy) and co-written with Allison Schroeder and Theodore Melfi (based on the nonfiction book by Margot Lee Shetterly), Hidden Figures arrives January 13.
