Marcy Dolapo Oni

With her memorable petite figure and alluring countenance, Marcy Dolapo Oni started her African Television career as the anchor on the Mnet show ’53 Extra’ and soon became a force to reckon with. The Nigerian-born actress and television personality received her Primary Education from Lebanese Community School in Lagos. She studied secondary education at Headington Girls Independent school in Oxford In the UK where she became the first black head girl. She went on to attain a Degree in Chemistry from the University of Bristol. But her true passion lay in the arts where she finally received a postgraduate degree from the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts in London and has since become a seasoned presenter, actress and style icon across Africa.

She has worked with classical and contemporary material across all mediums – from stage and film, to radio – crafting her expertise in entertainment. With roles in numerous plays like Shakespeare’s A midsummer nights dream, Walking Waterfall by Nii Ayikwei Parkes, In Time by Bola Agbaje and God is a DJ by Oladipo Agboluaje; this driven lady continues to raise the bar in her acting realm.

One of her most memorable acting roles was in the play ‘Iya-Ile'(The First wife), produced by Soho Theatre/the Tiata Fahodzi Company. The stage piece was written by the talented, Oladipo Agboluaje, who was also behind the short-film “Area Boys,” shot in the bustling metropolitan city of Lagos, Nigeria. Ms. Oni played multiple roles and the play was nominated for the prestigious Lawrence Olivier Award in the “Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre” category. She was later cast in the BBC mini-series ‘Vexed’ but segued into the African industry because of her deep love for homegrown entertainment.

“Life in the Nigerian entertainment industry has been challenging but exhilarating as it takes some time to adapt to the rhythms of the acting and entertainment world,” she says. “I love what I do but continue to work on my craft. You never stop growing in this business.”

In 2011, she was cast as the ‘Lady in Blue’ in the Nigerian adaptation of the famous Broadway stage play ‘For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow is Enuf’ by Ntozake Shange. Her character’s visceral account is the tale of a woman who chooses to have an abortion. Oni shared the stage with notable actresses like Joke Silva, Matilda Obaseki and Ireti Doyle, and was well received for her lead role from seasoned theatre critics. Last year, she was new addition to the cast of the hit South African TV- Series ‘Jacob’s Cross,’ where she plays ‘Moremi Omotoso’ – a woman who is passionate, liberated, strong and fights for what she believes in.

She has hosted many events for various companies such as Nokia, P&G, Complete fashion magazine, The future awards, Africa Magic, Malta Guinness and Genevieve Magazine to name a few. She was chosen to represent Nigeria as a VIP guest on behalf of Moet and Chandon champagne at the 2012 Roland Garros tournament.

The globetrotting beauty has more exciting business opportunities down her alley this year. She has just been named as a brand ambassador for the latest beverage from Diageo called Snapp. She continues to seek challenging acting roles and can still be seen on TV screen near you.
