483,796 people not eligible to vote in Edo – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says out of 2,210,534 registered voters in Edo state, only 1,726,738 would be allowed to participate in the governorship election scheduled for Saturday.

According to INEC, 483,796 voters would not be allowed to participate in the exercise because they didn’t collect their permanent voter cards (PVCs).

In a booklet detailing the statistics of PVC collection in Edo, INEC noted that the election will be conducted in 2,627 polling units in 192 electoral wards across the 18 local government areas (LGAs) in the state.

Ikpoba-Okha LGA has the highest number with 315,410 registered voters, but only 214,822 persons have collected their PVCs, followed by Oredo with 313,553 registered voters, out of which 240,197 PVCs have been collected — Oredo has the highest figure of PVCs collected in the state.

Meanwhile, in Akoko Edo where 119,254 voters were registered to participate in the exercise, only 3,911 PVCs were not collected, making it the LGA with the lowest figure of uncollected PVCs in the state.

The distribution of registered voters in the three senatorial districts of the state shows that Edo south has the highest figure of 1,281,414; the north has 564,122, while the central district has 364,998.

The governorship election is being contested by 14 candidates.
