Ajimobi’s Phantom 21 Obas Drop Crowns, Prostrate To Olubadan As He clocks 91

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, HRH Oba Saliu Adetunji, Aje Ogunguniso 1, on his 91st birthday, got a surprise.

He received the 21 controversial kings earlier elevated to kingship by the former Governor of Oyo State, Senator Isiaka Abiola Ajimobi. It was during the fanfare that marked his 91st birthday, yesterday, that the unexpected visitors arrived the palace in unison, and wowed everyone in the palace when they all went flat down on the ground in front of the nonagenarian Olubadan in utmost obeisance and recognition of his paramount ruler-ship of the ancient city.

In this new and gladdening development, it was evident that the reconciliatory moves within the traditional institutions in Oyo State, initiated by the new governor of the state, Seyi Makinde, has inevitably received a boost, as the erstwhile Olubadan High Chiefs paid the 91 year-old monarch, the homage at his Popo Yemoja, Ibadan palace without their beaded crowns, especially on such an auspicious occasion of Oba Adetunji’s birthday. Among the nine high chiefs, six were present at the palace.

Those absent included the Osi Olubadan, Senator Rashidi Ladoja; Asipa Balogun, Lateef Gbadamosi Adebimpe; and Ekerin Olubadan, Biodun Kola Daisi; although they were said to have earlier sent their written apologies to the palace, as they were said to be out of town, so unavoidably absent at the epoch-making event.

Before now, the estranged High Chiefs had vowed to retain their beaded crowns as kings, claiming that their promotion from High chiefs to beaded crown-wearing Obas was backed by relevant and extant laws, even as the Olubadan then vehemently insisted that they must be stripped of their crowns, before they can be recognized again as members of the revered Olubadan Advisory Council.

But the surprise visitation of the High Chiefs to the monarch yesterday was an indication that the High Chiefs have finally bowed to the wishes of the Olubadan, resolving the two-year-old royal tussle, that almost tore the traditional institution of the town apart, that even necessitated a face-off with the royal father and the then Governor Ajimobi, who against all entreaties elevated the High Chiefs to kingship statuses.Image may contain: 6 people, including Wale Adedayo, people smiling, people sitting.

Reports has it that about 1:30 p.m. on that day, the High Chiefs, led by Otun Olubadan, Lekan Balogun, came to pay homage to the Olubadan in the company of Balogun Owolabi Olakulehin; Osi Balogun Tajudeen Ajibola; Asipa Olubadan Eddy Oyewole; Ekarun Olubadan Amidu Ajibade and Ekarun Balogun Kola Adegbola.Decked in flowing gowns, beads and various caps to match, the High Chiefs arrived the palace amid drumbeats, songs, and joyful dances.

They joined the Iyalode of Ibadanland, High Chief Theresa Oyekanmi; Agbaakin Olubadan, Senior Chief Lekan Alabi; Chief Adeyemi Soladoye-led members of the CCII, several Mogajis, and Baales from all the 11 Local Government Councils in Ibadanland, to celebrate the joy of the day with the Olubadan, who gracefully and healthily clocked 91 years.
