ON THE ALLEGED FACE-OFF, BETWEEN APOSTLE JOHNSON SULEIMAN AND DSS BY RICHARD AKINOLA

Earlier, news of the arrests of Apostle Johnson Suleman on the possible directives of the President, M. Buhari. The Operatives from the Department of State Security on Wednesday morning stormed Midas Hotel, Iworoko, Ado-Ekiti.

The man of God, Suleman is hosting a two-day crusade in Ado Ekiti tagged ‘Help From Above’, his first in Ekiti State.

Richard Akinola shares insights and his opinion on the matter which we gather is being settled amicably. Read below –

I reiterate, that l am against the incitement contained in the video of Apostle Sulaiman, directing his church members to kill any fulani herdsman found within his church compound, on the premise that the government has refused to do anything on the death of several Christians in the hands of the herdsmen.

I know people are bound to be emotive on this issue. But again, l plead for caution.

As a student of history, it was this type of scenario that led to the pogrom against Igbo soldiers, which resulted in the July 29, 1966 counter-coup by Northern officers.

Just like Apostle Suleiman and some christians are alleging that the present government is not doing enough to punish and deal with the menace of the fulani hersdmen, who had allegedly killed many Christians, the Northern officers had accused the then Head of State, General Aguiyi Ironsi of reneging in bringing to book, those who killed Northern officers and politicians in the January 15, 1966 coup.

On the day Ironsi was arrested, along with Col. Adekunle Fajuyi, then Governor of Western Region, Fajuyi came out of the living room of the Government House, Ibadan and asked Major T.Y.

Danjuma what he wanted and Danjuma told him that all he wanted was to arrest the Supreme Commander. Then, Ironsi stepped out and asked Danjuma “what do you want”? Major Danjuma replied “You are under arrest.

You organised the killing of our brother officers in January and you have done nothing to bring the dissident elements to justice because you were part and parcel of the whole thing”.

General Ironsi said “who told you that? You know it’s not true”. Major Danjuma replied: “You are lying. You have been fooling us. I ran around risking my neck, trying to calm the ranks, and in February, you told us that they would be tried.

This is July and nothing has been done. You will answer for your actions” (Excerpts from “DANJUMA: THE MAKING OF A GENERAL” by Lindsay Barrett, published 1979). As they say, the rest is history.

It is in this context am looking at this face-off. As l said, l denounce the inciting statements of Sulaiman but again, we have to situate it within the context of his provocative statement, which is, the alleged government’s lethargic attitude to bringing to book, the fulani herdsmen who killed many Christians. The government needs to be circumspect in dealing with this issue.

First, l expect the government to have contacted the leadership of CAN, admonishing it to call its members to order from making further inflammatory and inciting statements on the issue.

For some supporters of the government, drawing swords on the social media, when the chips are down, you will not be there when the consequences of your proposed hardline action are executed.

Or haven’t we seen in the Bible how Peter denied Jesus when it mattered most, despite all his previous grandstanding? Caution, wisdom and circumspection should be our attitude.
