Most award shows go down between the stretch of time from January through March, otherwise known as “Awards Season.”

Which is why when the American Music Awards roll around each year in mid-November, they’re always a bit of a surprise—and a welcome reprieve from the otherwise painfully slow red carpet circuit (with the exception of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and Glamour’s own Women of the Year awards).

Last year brought us unexpected looks like butt-length hair and, uh, Chrissy Teigen’s “hooha” (her words, not ours), while this year’s 2017 AMAs red carpet looks were just as unforgettable. (Like, come on, Selena Gomez went blond!) Scroll on through for our favorite hair and makeup looks from the night—we’ll be adding them as everyone hits the carpet.

Selena Gomez

Why, yes, that is a very blond Selena Gomez. And all signs point to the fact that this is no wig—she’s joined Team Platinum with this shade her colorist calls “Nirvana Blond.”

Demi Lovato

It was last year at this very red carpet that “butt-length hair” made its big resurgence, and the trend lives on—on Demi’s head.

It took awhile to tear our eyes away from this dress, but thankfully we did because now we’ve got our holiday makeup inspo on lock.

Even if you’d never, there’s no denying wet look hair always looks cool on the red carpet.

Kat Graham

Beveled-edge bobs took a break for nearly two decades, but they’re making their way back onto celebrities—and into our hearts.

We know. You want the name of that lipstick. We’re happy to report, we can deliver: It’s Chantecaille’s classic red Matte Chic in Carmen.
