An 18-year-old lady identified as Hadiza Babawo has been arrested by security operatives in Gombe State for her role in the kidnapping of a four-year-old girl, Aishatu Mohammed.
Babawo and her partner in crime, Bala Shuaibu were paraded alongside other suspects including armed robbers and kidnappers terrorizing the state at the premises of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Gombe, the state capital.
The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) SP Mary Malum who paraded the suspects, noted that SARS operatives, acting on credible intelligence, arrested Hadiza Babawo from Lafiya, Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State for criminal conspiracy and kidnapping.
“During the course of interrogation, Hadiza Babayo confessed to the crime and stated how she and one Bala Shuaibu, abducted the victim from Gombe High School and kept her in a hotel at Nayi-Nawa quarters Gombe, where they demanded a ransom of six million naira (N6m) from the victim’s father before she could be released.
The SARS operatives responded swiftly and rescued the victim unhurt, without any ransom,” the PPRO stated.
Fielding questions from journalists, the suspect who is related to the victim, said that she contacted her boyfriend to kidnap her cousin to get money off her uncle.
“After bringing her from school, I arranged to take her to my boyfriend (Shuaibu). We wanted to use the opportunity to get money from my uncle since he had not shown me enough care,” she said.
An uncle to the victim, Alhaji Umar Shafudeen, who spoke to newsmen on the incident, narrated how the abduction of Aishatu was a 24-hours of turmoil.
“We were disturbed because of the safety of the young girl and we had to visit the Commissioner of Police, who in turn alerted his men. We are glad that our child has been returned to us.”
