FITAC Rejoices, As Nigerian Tribune Clocks 70
On behalf of Ambassador Yemi Farounbi, OON, the Chairman, Trustees and Members of the FOUNDATION FOR IBADAN TELEVISION ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS(FITAC), I congratulate the Chair, Board of Directors, Management and Staff of the African Newspapers of Nigeria PLC, on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Nigerian Tribune newspaper and the commissioning of the “TRIBUNE HOUSE”, in Isheri,Ogun State.
It gladdens the heart that the sterling ideas of the Founder of the Nigerian Tribune, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, SAN, GCFR, are kept alive by successive Boards, Management and Staff of the ANN PLC. Moreso, in the stable’s newspapers balanced reportage, fearless and objective opinions and fair comments.
As an astute and remarkable manager of men and resources, history will forever remember that Chief Awolowo, as the Premier, led the Western Nigeria Government to found Africa’s first television station, the Western Nigeria Television(WNTV) Ibadan, which started transmission on 31st October, 1959.
WNTV was a pride to all,for her world-standard news and programmes, adminstration, engineering and financing ethos, until her forceful take-over in 1976, by the retired General Olusegun Obasanjo-led Federal Military Government.
Nevertheless, We at FITAC, relish the symbiotic relationship and shared values, as it were, via Chief Awolowo’s vision and thoroughness, between the Nigerian Tribune newspaper and the WNTV. Although WNTV is defunct, the Nigerian Tribune holds the record of being the longest-surviving private newspaper.
We salute the doggedness of those who have kept alive the vision of Chief Awolowo and that of his late wife, YeyeOba Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo, Papa’s “JEWEL OF INESTIMABLE VALUE”, and co-founder of the Nigerian Tribune newspaper.
May the ANN PLC keep going from strength to strength in presenting undiluted news and balanced opinions.Amen.
