Governor Matawalle of Zamfara seeks death sentence for reckless driving
Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara state said his administration will introduce a death sentence for reckless driving. The governor made the statement on Saturday, August 29 when reacting to a fatal accident that claimed the lives of 15 supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The accident occurred when a truck lost control and rammed into four vehicles conveying the victims along Gusau-Funtua Road in Tsafe local government area of the state.
Matawalle said the new law will also ensure that reckless drivers are compelled to pay compensation on every life lost. The governor also announced a donation of N2 million to families of each of the deceased who had a wife and N1.5 million to families of those unmarried among the deceased.
In another report, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on Thursday, August 27, said it has arrested 25 people suspected to be drivers’ license and vehicle particulars fraudsters.
The ICPC spokesman said the drivers’ license fraudsters were nabbed in Lagos state after a collaborative effort with the Department of State Services (DSS) and Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).
