HPAN WORKS TO IMPROVE EDUCATION AND SKILLS TO REDUCE CRIME – DR. NATHANIEL
Rev (Dr) Nathaniel Oyinloye is a humanitarian, philanthropist, voice for the voiceless and an ambassador for peace.
He is a holder of several awards including Fellowship of Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), for encouragement of Arts, Science, Commerce and Financial Management.
He is also the first Vice Chairman, of Nigerian Diaspora Security Forum (NDSF). Dr Nathaniel Oyinloye is the founder and CEO of Hospital and Prison Action Network (HPAN), a humanitarian and welfare registered charity organization based in United Kingdom since 2003.
His organization HPAN promotes the rehabilitation and resettlement of ex-offenders into the community and early intervention for young people.
During a recent interview with NaijaOnlineTV, Dr. Oyinloye revealed that his organization works to ensure optimal offender mental and physical health and also work to improve education and developing skills to reduce re-offending.
On how the HPAN organization was started, Dr. Oyinloye informed that charity is in his blood, as he inherited it from his parents who were very caring and generous.
In furtherance he said, when he was working in the hospital he discovered that many people had been abandoned by friends and family and they felt lonely, as it contributed to a deterioration in their health and some did not feel like living again.
His visiting prison according to him actually started when some friends were locked up for no reason and were abandoned by friends and family. He started visiting them and lending support.
To analyse the impact HPAN has made since inception, Dr. Oyinloye mentioned that many of his organization’s service user’s lives have been transformed, some gained employment, some gained admission, while some took up other form of skill training, as some also graduated as legal practitioners.
One of the challenges Dr Nathaniel Oyinloye is experiencing is a fact that quite a number of people do not understand the meaning of charity, he said.
Many people believe charity is another way of generating money, while some of his staff and volunteers with wrong motives have moved away.
He stated that some people joined the organisation as a volunteer, with the aim to see how it operates, to start their own. He said some joined and later left after reaching comfort zone and decided to pull him and the organization down.
In response to a question asked by NaijaOnlineTV during the interview, Dr. Oyinloye informed that some of the measures to put in place to curb homelessness and crime related activities in the society is making available by the government, low cost housing scheme, job creation, price control on foods, creating empowerment programs for the unemployed, offering further education and training, including one on one mentoring among others.
However, he revealed that a major challenge his organization (HPAN) is experiencing is non availability of funds to finance projects.
As the renowned humanitarian is presently working on a project called “Operation Feed London”.
On the project he says, it is very alarming this day about the rate of poverty going on in the community, more reason why ” Operation Feed London ” has been designed to set up homeless centres in all London borough. The aim of the project is to reduce poverty and crime in the community.
