I’d have no hestitation in making Sterling captain – Southgate
Raheem Sterling could cap off an incredible season by captaining England in the Nations League semi-final against the Netherlands, according to manager Gareth Southgate.
The game would be Sterling’s 50th cap for his country, coming when he is only 24 years old.
Sterling’s club team, Manchester City sealed a historic treble on Saturday, when they beat Watford 6-0.
The ex-Liverpool man was at one point credited with a hat-trick, and thought he was the first player to score three in an FA Cup final since Stan Mortensen in 1953.
The first goal of the three was eventually credited to Gabriel Jesus with it being ruled Sterling had swept home the Brazil international’s shot when the ball was already over the line.
Later on Saturday it was revealed Southgate considers him a potential captain, should regular skipper Harry Kane have to miss out on the Nations League Finals with injury.
