THE KADUNA KILLINGS

Sometime yesterday evening, I saw the picture of a 14 year old girl. Actually it was a picture of her dead body. She was one of the victims of the recent violent killings in Kaduna State. She was indoors in the same manner everyone was supposed to have been indoors. You see a 24 hour curfew had been imposed by the “Chief Security Officer of the State” in the person of Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, the Kaduna State Governor. This incident happened on Christmas day. On Christmas day when everyone (the Chief Security Officer inclusive) wined, dined, went on outings, felicitated and sent good will messages to family, friends and loved ones. It was on that Christmas day, during the 24 hour curfew imposed on three Local Government Areas in Kaduna State comprising majorly of Christians that this incident occurred.

As they heeded the 24 hour curfew, they were attacked allegedly by Fulani herdsmen. Death was in the air. Death was in the air in those three local government areas on Christmas day. There are reports of rape, beatings, maiming and killings. Something happened to me when I saw that young lady’s picture; the daughter of a lawyer and former Council Chairman. What kind of person(s) kill a 14 year old girl at home in cold blood on Christmas day?

Mallam Rufai is no stranger to controversy. As a matter of fact, many would say he courts it. This is not about him.

It is no longer news that there has been a surge in the spate of brazen acts of brigandry by rampaging Fulani herdsmen in the past year or so since the advent of the PMB administration. This is another case of ‘above the law’. Our brother is the Head of State so we can do whatever we like. The Fulani herdsmen have gone around without restraint. Without regard and in defiance even contempt for the authorities whose inaction and body language appear like a tacit endorsement. State Governors have shouted themselves hoarse. Governor Fayose had to commission a special force to curb this menace in his State.

PMB has come under heat these past few months and quite frankly I do not envy him. News from the grapevine is that the establishment is shopping for his replacement in 2019. I do not dislike PMB as a person. As a matter of fact, I am amused when many refer to him as an ignorant Mallam. You can tell from his eyes that he is an intelligent even shrewd gentleman. Watch his eyes when he speaks. He is just a rigid fellow and hopefully learning some flexibility. That is the reason why when his appointees fail him, I feel a little sorry for him.

Only yesterday it was Dalung, today I am reading about Femi Adesina‘s comments in his attempt to defend why PMB has not said anything about the killings. According to him, since we operate a Federal System of Government and Mallam Rufai had personally come to Aso Rock to brief the President, there was no reason for the President to comment as the matter was under control in the hands of the competent Chief Security Officer of the State. The same Chief Security Officer under whose watch these people were murdered, raped, maimed and made destitute after homes and properties had been destroyed?

Was Mr. Adesina asleep when PMB made his famous “I belong to nobody and I am for everybody” declaration? Was he not privy to the goodwill message that was sent to the Governor and people of Akwa Ibom during the collapse of the church? Did he see the picture of that girl whose life was snuffed out at 14 (barely two weeks after he witnessed his boss give out his own daughter in marriage)? Does Mr. Adesina have any children? How does one explain the attack of a people who were left vulnerable and exposed under the watch of the same Government that was supposed to protect them?

The imposition of a 24 hour curfew implies an availability of adequate personnel to enforce it. Where were these Law Enforcement Agents when all these was going on? Is this not a fundamental breach enough for whoever was in charge of enforcing the curfew in that particular area to be arrested and placed behind bars pending investigations? Who would explain to the slain girl’s siblings how and why their sister was murdered? Is Femi Adesina not aware of the circumstances surrounding this senseless killings and destruction on Christmas day? Shouldn’t he have enough sense to at least cover for his boss and stall by saying that PMB was still considering the reports and that he was very sorry for those that lost their lives blah blah blah? How can he be so insensitive?

Maybe Adesina‘s office and residence is also at Aso Rock and the voodoo Reuben Abati referred to may have taken a temporary hold of his senses.

Postscript:-

On the other hand, could it be that his deafening silence is deliberate? Could PMB be himself complicit?
