Maureen Mmadu, First Nigerian Footballer, To Reach 101 Caps, For The National Team

Maureen Mmadu is an Ex-International, Nigerian female footballer who played in the Super Falcons team. During a recent interview with NaijaOnlineTV, Maureen Mmadu revealed playing football as a female during her time wasn’t easy, as her parents never wanted her to play football, insinuating that girls don’t play ball.

Maureen Mmadu is a graduate of Physical and Health Education from the University of Lagos. Mmadu laced her boot for Nigerian local league clubs, like Ado Babes FC of Onitsha, Jegede Babes FC of Lagos and Pelican Stars FC of Calabar, before leaving the shores of Nigeria in 2002 for Norway. Where she had gathered experiences as a foreign based footballer.

While in Norway, Maureen Mmadu played for clubs like, IL Sandviken FC, Klepp IL FC, before joining Swedish teams, QBIK FC and Linkopings FC. Mmadu later moved back to Norway, to join Amazon FC then she later moved to Norwegian side, Grimstad FC, then moved to Kolbotn IL and later to Avaldsnes IL, where she became player/coach in 2012. Maureen Mmadu was with the Avaldsnes IL team, from 2011-2016.

In 2013-2015, Maureen Mmadu was an Assistant Coach with Premier League side, Avaldsnes IL and later became Head Coach of first division side, Klobthon football club.

Presently based in Norway while shuttling Nigeria, Maureen Mmadu works as a Coach while she also manages her pet business, WATTY Energy drink.

During her active time as a player, Maureen Mmadu had several unforgettable moments, one of which was during the Athens Olympic 2004 match against Japan, which Nigeria won 1-0. She played so well, that she was taken for drug test, after the match.

Also a memorable moment during her football career, was when she and her other members of the Super Falcons team, led Nigeria to an Olympic tournament qualification, as part of the last 8 teams during the 1990 world cup.

In regards to her achievements and a very successful footballing career, Maureen Mmadu at the Nigerian Sports Award 2016 edition, which was held at the Eko Hotel and Suites was honored with a special recognition award as the first Nigerian footballer, in history to attain 101 caps for the national team in 2011.

Mmadu told NaijaOnlineTV, she was very happy, when she got the award and its recognition, saying she felt fulfilled knowing she really worked hard to achieve that.

During her leisure, Maureen Mmadu relaxes at home, cooking food and watching football, as she is a big fan and supporter of England premier league club, Manchester United, her favourite team.


Born Maureen Nkeiruka Mmadu, on the 7th of May 1975 in Onitsha, Anambra state, Nigeria, Mmadu who plays as a midfielder, is a Nigerian female footballer, who has made more than 100 appearances for the Nigeria women’s national football team, including appearing at four FIFA women’s world cups and has featured in the 2000 and 2004 summer Olympics.
