What to do is look at how the Nigerian media has fared against the above theme and contemplate what needed to be done.
I ask, what has the media in Nigeria done with the freedom they have to work with in advancing peaceful, just and inclusive existence between our different groups and tribes?
It is important that we look at this to determine what more needed to be done. The role of the media in a democratic society can’t be played when the media remain appendages of political parties and of politicians.
The role won’t be played when journalists see their work simply as a means to an end and not as an end in itself.
When the media fails to act and joins in dealing our nation crucial blows of defeat, but yet we tend to moralise on the rot that we help create when we happen to be at the receiving end of our inaction.
We write to condemn government actions, and at our place of work we see nothing wrong in publishers owing year long salaries to workers.
As editors we are guests of state executives, when we depart, it is not empty handed, invariably contributing to the misgovernance pervasive in our nation today.
At Christmas, Ileya and other festivities, our homes are loaded with gifts which buys favour for politicians, which twists our tone and pitch and which compels us not to be objective.
Its okay to act as PR agents for commercial interests, and demand tips to cover events that has definite bearing on the people’s life. How long more can we continue like this?
To outstanding media men and women who are showing us that they are different, giving voice to the voiceless, defending the defenceless, and standing right at all time. I salute your courage.
