The Republic of Biafra

Perhaps I should start by saying that my information on this matter really is on the shallow side when compared to most.

Admittedly, I have a basic working knowledge of the Nigerian Civil War and I am not unaware of MASSOB and their repeated proclamations of independence for the Republic of Biafra in the past.

What I do know is that whether or not the PMB administration admits it, the continued detention of that young man (Nnamdi Kanu) without trial, bolsters the cause for the Republic of Biafra.

When a group of people have resolved to seek their right to self determination as MASSOB currently does, they really cannot be stopped. It is only a matter of time. History is replete with illustrations. What remains to be seen is exactly how many folks of Eastern descent have bought into this movement and whether or not, as some allege, MASSOB is just an ambitious display of excesses by a tyrannical few.

My understanding is that his order of release is predicated on an undertaking from him to hands off the Biafra project, an overture which he since declined.

Recession has bitten so hard that it seems as though any discourse on this matter appears to be a burdensome enterprise for many.

My concerns at this time, do not bother on the merits and demerits of the agitations for the Republic of Biafra. I would require much more information for that.

We gather from the news that earlier today, an application for his bail was turned down (I think) by the Federal High Court (in what would appear as the aftermath of the STING operation). In any case, unless I am wrong there are subsisting orders for his bail by both the ECOWAS Court and another court of first instance which have gone unheeded.

Nnamdi Kanu has been in detention for far too long. He should be arraigned and tried without further delay, released on bail or simply cut loose.

Not only is his continued incarceration without trial most condemnable in the extreme, the same is a flagrant violation of his constitutional rights and a damning indictment on the human rights record of the President Buhari led Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Nnamdi Kanu should be released now!
