A different type of creepy: A CURE FOR WELLNESS’s first trailer

Get ready for the psychological thriller of the year. The first trailer for A Cure For Wellness has recently been released and it looks like something that might leave a few shivers down your spine.

After his last misfire, The Lone Ranger, director Gore Verbinski (Rango, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Ring) and screenwriter Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road, The Clearing) reunite for A Cure for Wellness.

The official synopsis reads:

An ambitious young executive is sent to retrieve his company’s CEO from an idyllic but mysterious ‘wellness center’ at a remote location in the Swiss Alps. He soon suspects that the spa’s miraculous treatments are not what they seem. When he begins to unravel its terrifying secrets, his sanity is tested, as he finds himself diagnosed with the same curious illness that keeps all the guests here longing for the cure.”

A Cure For Wellness stars Dane DeHaan, Jason Isaacs and Mia Goth. 20th Century Fox will release the thriller in theaters February 17.

The production companies include Milchan’s Regency Enterprises and his New Regency Prods, Studio Babelsberg, Blind Wink Prods an TSG Entertainment.

The visually stunning and creepy trailer is here, with the backdrop music a very mellow cover of “I Want to Be Sedated” originally performed by legendary American punk band The Ramones.

The director mentioned a few things about the genre of his upcoming project in an Empire interview.

“It’s its own thing. More psychological thriller than full-on horror, but I’ve sort of set out to analyse the moviegoer. I wanted to diagnose the audience a bit and then offer a cure. This sense that maybe it’s all pointless, you know? It’s definitely… yeah, it’s like going in for a treatment, I suppose.”

He also added a few thoughts about the soundtrack of the trailer.

“I asked (Finnish singer-songwriter) Mirel Wagner to record an a cappella to set against our track. She crushed it. Will it appear in the movie? I don’t want to say. At this stage, I just want people to get a whiff of this movie… there’s something in this film that’s very Lotus-eaters. The place itself is very seductive, this sanitarium. It’s about absolution in a way. The diagnosis itself is what keeps people from leaving. It allows you to avoid taking responsibility; it’s like having a note from your doctor, and who doesn’t want that? That I Wanna Be Sedated track is about letting yourself go… losing your purchase on reality. That’s the horror of the place.”
