Sony’s Venom and A Star is Born shatters box-office record
October is proving to be the right month for the movie, Venom and the duo of Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, stars of A Star is Born. It has been a great month for Hollywood.
Both “Venom,” and “A Star Is Born,” brought in massive ticket sales in a month not known for seeing strong numbers. Deadline said that “Venom” and “A Star Is Born,” brought in the best weekend financially in October history at the box office.
Sony’s “Venom,” earned the No.1 spot, bringing in an $80 million haul at the domestic box office. Sony edged out record-holder “Gravity,” which earned $55.7 million in 2013. Venom’s had a strong opening overseas despite not opening in China yet.
Despite receiving negative reviews and receiving a 31 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, Venom had strong success.
Globally, the film has secured $125.2 million, outperforming industry projections. “Venom” was first introduced [VIDEO BELOW]to the Marvel universe in “Spider-Man 3.” Many critics called it a “studio misfire.” Meanwhile, “A Star Is Born,” boasts a 91 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Venom succeeded in rebooting Sony’s attempts at expanding their Marvel expansion.
“A Star Is Born,” received critical acclaim for both Bradley Cooper’s directorial work and Lady Gaga’s debut performance. Warner Bros. distribution chief Jeffrey Goldstein told USA Today that they knew they had a hit with “A Star Is Born,” and that they knew that every time moviegoers saw the movie, they cried and loved it.
‘Venom’ and ‘A Star Is Born,’ drew very different audiences
“Venom,” succeeded thanks to a younger, male-driven audience.
While “A Star Is Born,” was being watched by females and older people. The remake starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga cost nearly $40 million to make and was being developed for decades. Previous versions were set to star Whitney Houston and Beyonce.
This weekend was a major kickoff to the final stretch of the 2018 movie season, which includes expected blockbusters including “Aquaman,” and “Mary Poppins Returns,” slated for release later in 2018.
Venom also managed to become the seventh-best launch of the year, besting fellow Marvel pic “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” which opened to $75 million this past summer.
Venom has become a solid win for Sony who has struggled to build a strong series of superhero pics beyond the Spider-Man franchise.
Their success is expected to grow as they enter the final stretch of the holiday weekend. As Venom appears to be a success, Tom Hardy has suggested pitting Venom against the Avengers
