Sowore, Revolution And The Aftermath Of 2019 Election By Dare Gbadebo
On Friday the 2nd of August 2019, we woke up to the news, of the arrest of AAC Presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, founder of Sahara reporters, who contested the Presidential election, just few months back.
The reason for the arrest, by operatives of DSS, can not be far-fetched, considering the planned revolution, the politician is set to stage, on the 5th of August, one that am still trying to understand. From my perspective, if results of elections are not accepted, is it not better contested at the court of law? Like former Vice President, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku is doing, with many of his followers believing he has the tendency to win at the court based on the evidences he has piled up.
Or rather if the candidacy of a particular contestant is in doubt, this I believe are issues that should be attended to before elections. Once the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC), clears a candidate, then the election takes place, with the contestant participating.
In as much as i do not support the arrest of Omoyele Sowore, by the DSS, i guess he left them no choice, as Nigeria is an absolute struggling country, in terms of security and even the economy and the law enforcement agencies will not be taken unaware. Even the Police IG has warned, that any attempt at a revolution, will be treated, as treasonable felony.
The 2019 general elections has taken place already and winners counting their gain, while losers are accepting their loss, at the polls. It will be better, for anyone who is eyeing or has plans for the Presidency, to start aligning their focus on the 2023 election.
However I would use a word from the President Muhammadu Buhari, who said whoever wants to be President, should work and keep working towards it. As it took a fourth attempt, spanning twelve years, for him to win the Presidential seat, at the Aso rock Villa, in Abuja, Nigeria as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. In conclusion, revolution is not staged and has no date, it is rather spontaneous.
