After the move by Harambee Stars coach Jacob ‘Ghost’ Mulee to appoint the Qatar-based striker as the captain, journalists delivered their verdict
I support the decision but not the way it was done. Victor [Wanyama] has served his country and national team well for more than a decade.
He has also been a good ambassador for the country abroad and deserves respect.
It is within coach Mulee’s jurisdiction to determine who the Harambee Stars captain is, but I think Victor [Wanyama] should have been accorded a more respectable way to exit the national team.
He served, he stood criticism directed at him and led the national side respectably, and thus the same should have been reciprocated for the “Lion of Muthurwa”.
There’s no clear tradition of how Harambee Stars armband changes hands; it has always been done unceremoniously. We recall how Wanyama got it from Dennis [Oliech], and the storm it caused, and now we have Olunga.
The big question should be, can Olunga deliver in the role? Methinks, the pressure, as a striker, will distract him and it’s already showing.
